The life expectancy of a flash memory is measured by the number of write or erase cycles. As the price of flash memory decreases, so too does the amount of possible write/erase cycles from 10,000 to as low as 100 cycles. Binary update methods that require erasing and reprogramming the entire flash to conduct software updates, can cause great strain on the memory drives and decrease hardware quality and performance.
Aurora Labs’ Auto Update creates additive update files that are written to the next free space on the flash. Up to 20 updates can be written to the existing Flash without requiring a single erase, prolonging the life of the Flash memory by 40x.
